PLYMOUTH - The Plymouth Panthers defeated the Xavier Hawks 3-0 in a dominant all-around performance in Thursday afternoon’s WIAA Division 3 Girls Soccer Sectional Semifinal match. With the win, the Panthers advance to Saturday’s Sectional Final against the Freedom Irish at 1 p.m. in Plymouth.
The Panthers dictated the action from start to finish, controlling time of possession and leading Xavier 15-1 in shots on goal.
After spending the majority of the first half attacking the Xavier goal, Plymouth finally got on the board at the 42:12 mark with a goal from senior Emma Welsch to go up 1-0.
The Panthers continued their relentless attack in the second half. Freshman Hailey Batzner scored at the 67:29 mark to give Plymouth some breathing room at 2-0, and fellow frosh Melina Knowles put the match away with the Panthers’ third score of the game with less than seven minutes remaining.
Plymouth’s outstanding defense kept the Hawks away from the Panther goal all afternoon, allowing the offense to take control. Senior Maggie Munson assisted on two of the three Panther goals to lead Plymouth.
