SHEBOYGAN — Time to get your game face on.
Each week, we will chat with an area high school athlete about why they got involved in sports, what their favorite sports memories are and much more.
Get to Know: Karsyn Bichler
School: Sheboygan North High School
Sport(s): Basketball, tennis, soccer
Favorite sport of those?
Basketball is definitely my favorite.
Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers. I'm a huge Packers fan.
What about your favorite basketball player?
That's really hard, but I'd probably say Steph Curry. I really like the way he plays with his threes and the way he handles the ball.
When did you get involved with sports?
I've probably been playing basketball since like second grade. It was because of my dad—he used to play and got me into sports, and he thought I'd enjoy basketball.
What do you like to do outside of school/sports?
Mainly I like to hang out with my friends. Because of COVID, we can't really do too much, so we drive around and we'll go down by the lake and listen to music.
Favorite sports memory?
My favorite would probably be when we had an overnight tournament by freshman year, and my team prank called our coaches. Then our coaches came back up to our hotel room and asked if we pranked them. Then they joined and we prank called the other coaches.
Any pre-game rituals?
Before every game I have to tap to the beat of the national anthem, that's probably my only ritual. I used to do it with my teammate, but she graduated and went to college.
What has been the highlight of your season thus far?
Probably our most recent game against Notre Dame. We did lose, but it was one of the best games we've played this season as a team. We went into it knowing that we were the underdogs, but we held with Notre Dame, so I was really pleased with that.
How are you feeling ahead of this weekend's North/South game?
I'm a bit nervous—it's always nerve-wracking going into this game. But I'm really pumped because it's always so much fun and such a fun atmosphere.
How has this season been for you and your teammates?
It's definitely been challenging. Our team has always been close and great friends, but it's hard this season to get together and do the things we want to do. Last year we had so many sleepovers and parties, and with our shortened season and with COVID, we haven't been able to do those things. We still have great team chemistry, but we can't do what we love and create those memories.
What are your plans after graduation?
I plan to go to a four-year college, but I'm not sure which yet. I want to major in biomedical engineering, and I do know that I plan to go out of state. Northwestern is definitely one that I'm hoping for.
How did you get interested in biomedical engineering?
I've always wanted to do something in the medical field, and I also really love and am good at math, so I was wondering how I could incorporate that. Then, I visited my brother's college, and they had a small room with a biomedical engineering display, and I got really interested in that.
