Get to know: Sara Bergman

Position: Principal Flute

How long have you been playing with the SSO?

My first season with the SSO was the 1993-1994 season when I played my secondary instrument, the violin. Really wanting to perform on the flute, which is my primary instrument, I rejoined the SSO again in 1999 or 2000, I can’t remember the exact year.

What has been one of your most memorable experiences playing with the SSO?

My most memorable experience playing with the SSO was when I was given the opportunity to perform Faure’s Fantasie for flute with the orchestra.

What is your favorite symphonic work?

This may sound like a non-answer, but I do not have a favorite. There are so many great works in a variety of genres by noted composers that it is impossible to zero in on just one.

What would you most like to play in a future concert?

I would like to perform a concert of standard orchestral repertoire, pieces that our audience can relate to, find familiar and leave them always wanting more.

Who are your favorite musical artists, classical or popular, and what have you been listening to this month?

As a musician by trade, I tend to want the house quiet after a full day of music making. When I do listen to music for fun, I am often found listening to the music that my children are into or quiet coffee house music that my husband enjoys. My guilty pleasures are violinist David Garrett and cellist Stjepan Hauser, as they both are classically trained, but also perform cross-over music.

Is there an instrument you've always wanted to learn but never had the chance to?

I’ve always wanted to learn how to play the organ and the harp.

What is your occupation outside of the SSO?

I have been an instrumental music teacher in the Sheboygan Area School District for the past 28 years. I am currently the orchestra director at North High School and Horace Mann Middle School. I also maintain a small private studio in my home where I teach flute and violin.

Are there any hidden talents, favorite hobbies or fun facts we may not know about you?

When I was a child, I was an avid ice skater and had aspirations to train for the Olympics. I was equally as invested in my music education, having been studying three instruments (piano, violin and flute) privately. I was forced to make a decision between music and skating as there were not enough hours in the day to adequately train to the level I was aspiring to in both. I chose music!
