MADISON – Two Sheboygan County companies had their products included in the annual “Coolest Thing Made in Wisconsin” contest sponsored by Wisconsin Manufacturers & Commerce.

Random Lake’s Krier Foods was honored for its line of Jolly Good sodas, a locally-popular brand founded in 1966 that has received rave reviews since being revived in 2015. Jolly Good is known for its offbeat flavors such as Blue Raspberry, Sour Pow’r, Cherry, Fruit Punch and Cream, along with its more traditional flavors Orange, Root Beer and Grape.

The Sheboygan Paint Company was recognized for its MachCure catalyst technology, which is added to industrial coatings to make them more environmentally-friendly. The product also improves worker safety, reduces production costs, and increases the longevity of coated products.

The MachCure catalyst was one of approximately 100 nominees for the contest, but did not make it past the first round of voting. Jolly Good soda, however, has advanced to the WMC Manufacturing Madness Top 16, which was announced on Wednesday, Sept. 28.

Voting to advance to the Round of Eight will conclude on Tuesday, Oct. 4, with the top eight announced on Wednesday, Oct. 5. Voting for the Final Four will then take place Oct. 6-11, with the top four products announced on Wednesday, Oct. 12. The final round of voting will take place from Oct. 13-19, with the winner announced on Business Day (Wednesday, Oct. 19) at the Monona Terrace in Madison.

The “Coolest Thing Made in Wisconsin” is a competition designed to highlight the Wisconsin manufacturing industry and the unique products it creates. The WMC has partnered with Johnson Financial Group since 2016 to put on the competition. For more information about the contest, visit www.madeinwis.com/.

Krier Foods began as a food preservation company in 1913, canning beets, corn and beans. The company later added a variety of other products, including soups, spaghetti and, of course, Jolly Good soda. The fifth-generation family-owned business is located in Random Lake.

The Sheboygan Paint Company was founded in 1921 to produce varnish for wooden chair manufacturing, one of Sheboygan’s biggest industries at the time. Since then, the company has evolved to create custom coatings that protect and enhance the appearance of metal, wood and plastic substrates.
