Thomas R. Schoemer

Thomas R. Schoemer, age 78, of Sheboygan, passed away peacefully on Monday, July 23, 2018 at Aurora Medical Center in Grafton after a courageous 8-year battle with cancer. He was born on April 23, 1940, the son of the late Robert and Armella Schlager Schoemer.

Tom attended Holy Name of Jesus Parish Elementary School and graduated in 1958 from Sheboygan North High School. He then furthered his education at UW-Sheboygan from 1958 to 1960 and graduated with a B.S. Degree in Industrial Technology from UW-Stout in 1963.

Tom was united in marriage to Mary A. Wehner on November 25, 1967 at Holy Name of Jesus Church and happily celebrated 50 years of marriage this past November. He was employed at the Sheboygan Press in the circulation dept in 1960, the former Great Lakes Homes Engineering Dept. & Head of Customer Service from 1964 to 1966, and Kohler Company in Engine & Generator Division Industrial Engineering and Corporate Manufacturing & Systems Engineering from 1966 until his retirement in 2002.

He was a current member of St. Dominic Catholic Church and a former Parish Lector, a Kohler Quarter Century Club member, a Meals on Wheels volunteer, and a 51 year Member of Our Lady of the Rosary Council 722 Knights of Columbus.

Tom enjoyed gardening, biking, hiking, playing baseball and softball for many years, and was a Milwaukee Brewer and Green Bay Packer fan. Feeding “his squirrels” in the backyard was a hobby he greatly enjoyed. He and Mary traveled extensively during their lives together. Tom was extremely dedicated to his family. He especially loved attending anything that involved his grandchildren. They were so very special to him and brightened his days.

Survivors include his wife, Mary, of Sheboygan; one daughter, Sara (James) Opgenorth, of Sheboygan; two grandchildren, Evan Opgenorth and Anna Opgenorth; his brother, Paul (Ann) Schoemer; two sisters, Ruth (Joseph) Ross and Louise Henning; and sister-in-law, Bonnie Schoemer. He is blessed to be survived by many wonderful nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Tom was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, John “Jack” Schoemer, and brother-in-law, Wesley Henning.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, July 30, 2018 at 12:00 p.m. at St. Dominic Catholic Church, 2136 N. 21st Street, Sheboygan with Rev. Matthew J. Widder officiating. Family and friends may gather at the church on Monday morning from 10:00 a.m. until the time of Mass at 12:00 p.m. Entombment will take place at the Calvary Cemetery Mausoleum.

In lieu of flowers, if you choose, please donate to the American Cancer Society, Anchor of Hope, or another cause close to you in Tom’s name.

Our family would like to thank family and friends for all of the support, encouragement, and love you have given to Tom throughout the course of his life. Our family would also like to thank the doctors and nurses who treated Tom with compassionate care; especially Dr. Kumar and staff at the Vince Lombardi Cancer Center and nurses Kayla and Sara at Aurora Grafton Hospital.
